Deb Soule began gardening and studying the medicinal uses of herbs over 48 years ago while growing up in rural Maine. In 1985 she founded Avena Botanicals Herbal Apothecary and Healing Gardens in Rockport, Maine, where she tends a three-acre Biodynamic herb garden, providing numerous herbs for Avena’s apothecary and herbs for herbal mutual aid projects. The overall farm serves as a sanctuary for pollinators, plants, and people and houses a small non-profit educational center titled The Herbal Hummingbird Hub. Deb is the author of The Woman’s Handbook of Healing Herbs, How To Move Like a Gardener, The Healing Garden, and Notes from the Hummingbird Corridor (March 2025) and the visionary behind the Grow a Row project.
