Farm Tour and Making Barrel Compost

Misty Brook Farm, 156 Bog Road, Albion, ME.

https://mistybrook.com/about-the-farm

Misty Brook Farm is a MOFGA certified organic farm raising cows, chickens, pigs, lamb, grains and vegetables. The farm has its own breeding stock; animals are born on the farm and live their lives there in peace, unlike other farms where young animals are purchased. The owners Katia and Brendan Holmes believe in closing the circle of inputs on the farm creating compost exclusively from their herd. Elexis, who works on the farm inoculates the compost with the biodynamic preparations she makes. Misty Brook Farm is where we obtain the sheaths, nettles, and some of the flowers for the preps we make. Misty Brook also has one of the best stocked farm stores in Maine.

Join us in making Barrel Compost in May! Otherwise known as a Cow Pat Pit, it is a method of transforming organic (preferably biodynamic) cow manure into a superfood catalyst for your soil. Some of the other major ingredients are our 200-million-year-old Maine basalt rock dust along with egg shells and the biodynamic compost preps. Should we create a Maine-Method Barrel Compost and add seaweed this year?? This addresses the question of making region-specific biodynamic creations. We will dig a pit, line it with brick, add the stirred manure and other ingredients and insert the biodynamic compost preparations. A detailed chronology of its transformation will be discussed
